Rainstorm
by Bob Markey

That wind-gust had to
hit close to fifty...
blew my hat across
the street into a
damn puddle!
Too wet to put back
on, I’ll wring it out,
go hatless...Would con-
tact lenses improve
rainy day
vision?...How about
moving from here to
California?
Will consider the
options while
drying out at home
after the wood fire
gets going...Maybe
less leaky raingear?
Yeah!...Forget
you, Cali
fornia!

Bob Markey is a poet and Whatcom Watch delivery person.

Pulsating Monsters
by Steve Hood

vast cities of human breeding, humping
like creatures with many arms and legs
growing taller, broader, more intimidating
extending miles on miles of streets and buildings

with tentacles reaching out, grasping, seizing
feeding a never ending hunger from outlying fields
and from coral reefs far away and jungles
straining factory farms to the limit with pesticides

devouring resources like wood, stone, and animals
vomiting and crapping religion, art, and politics
building museums like morgues reflecting the past
dining on collapsing schools of blue fin tuna

millions of miles of electrical cables and cords
streetlights bathe people, and cars belch filth,
petty dramas, betrayals, and egocentric denial
eating earth alive, ignoring the piercing screams

Steve Hood is a Bellingham writer and attorney.
