by April Markiewicz
April Markiewicz is president of People for Lake Whatcom
People for Lake Whatcom is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of Lake Whatcom reservoir and its surrounding watershed through education and advocacy. We believe that adequate protection of the reservoir necessitates minimizing current human impacts in its watershed and implementing policies and procedures that stop, as well as reverse, the damage that has been done to the water quality in Lake Whatcom.
We recently conducted a short survey of local candidates running for city and county council positions to determine her/his perspectives on Lake Whatcom issues. Some of the questions relate to issues outside the authority of the candidates elected office; however, we believe the responses provide a good indication of a candidates position on these issues. It is People for Lake Whatcoms hope that the general public will find these survey results helpful when voting in the primary and general election.
Each candidate was contacted by phone prior to and after receiving the questionnaire to encourage participation in the survey. Only a yes or no response was requested for each question. Additional comments by candidates were not included in the survey results.
Please contact People for Lake Whatcom at 360-676-1254 or e-mail info@pflw.org if you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding this survey (see links below).
The results can be found on our website at:

The letter explains the purpose of the survey and as you will notice, not all candidates responded to our survey. Please note that as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization People for Lake Whatcom does not endorse candidates. The survey is merely to educate you and the public on where these candidates stand on key Lake Whatcom issues. §
